Knights of Columbus Responds to Hurricane Sandy.
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, in conjunction with local and state councils across the Northeast, is joining relief efforts.
The Supreme Council announced this morning that it is making an immediate $100,000 donation, giving $50,000 each to the state councils of New York and New Jersey to assist in local relief efforts in those hardest-hit jurisdictions.
In addition, the Supreme Council has launched an online donation drive, soliciting contributions from its members and the general public. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to relief efforts in local communities.
"Knights have a long tradition of providing disaster relief," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, "and this is no exception. Our communities need our time, our help, and our financial assistance, and we are going to do all that we can - working closely with our local and state councils - to help those most in need as a result of this storm." Join us with your commitment to DONATE NOW.

Bishops Ask Catholics to Take Action
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops would like to encourage every Knight of Columbus to take immediate action to support religious freedom and rights of conscience for Catholics and Catholic institutions.
The delegates at our 129th Supreme Convention in Denver in August unanimously passed a resolution pledging our support for freedom of conscience in health care. This resolution was in response to a rule recently issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as ¿preventive services¿ for women.
The new rule would force insurance plans to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods and sterilization procedures, including ¿emergency contraception¿ drugs that may cause an abortion by interfering with the implantation of a newly-conceived human being. More information is available on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website and in the NCHLA Action Alert regarding the Health and Human Services Contraceptive Mandate. The mandate will force individuals and groups with religious or moral objections to purchase and provide such coverage. The rule poses a serious threat to the religious freedom of both individuals and institutions.
The Department of Health and Human Service has established a period for public comment that ends on September 30th. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging Catholics to show their support for bi-partisan legislation, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179 / S.1467), which would ensure that federal mandates do not violate the deeply-held moral and religious convictions of our citizens.
After sending a message to HHS, Knights will be automatically invited to send a message to their elected representatives in Congress, urging them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act.
The Knights of Columbus will always support religious freedom as a basic civil right. No persons or institutions should ever be forced to act in a manner contrary to their moral and religious beliefs.

Coats for Kids at the Hispanic Cultural Center, Nampa, ID.
December 20, 2010
The Idaho State Council of the Knights of Columbus is pleased to announce the introduction of the “Coats for Kids” Program in Idaho. In cooperation with the Hispanic Cultural Center the Knights of Columbus have distributed over 300 coats to children to wear this winter. Volunteers from Treasure Valley Councils assisted with the distribution.
"As our nation faces tough economic times, we believe it is very important to respond within our communities in concrete ways to help those most in need," said State Deputy, Brian Simer. "Helping children in need was a fundamental reason for the formation of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 and continues to be a very important component of our work today."
The "Coats for Kids" program is an outgrowth of the Knights' "Help a Child in Need" campaign, which began in 2006 with nationwide television advertisements encouraging people to donate to charities in their areas in support of poor children.
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization with more than 1.8 million members worldwide. Last year, Knights gave more than 68 million hours of their time to charitable causes and donated more than $151 million to charity
December 23, 2010 An additional 150 coats were donated to the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce coat drive.
